What types of investment management are there exactly?

Are there different types? I'm just trying to understand what kinds of investments companies like PIMCO are managing/consulting. #finance #financial-services #investment-management #investing

Generally there are investment managers that manage money for individuals (called financial advisors), investment managers that advise institutional clients like pension funds or endowments, and investment managers that manage funds that individuals or institutional clients actually invest invest in.


There are many different asset classes that an investment manager can specialize in such as:


Equities (stocks)
Fixed income (bonds)
Commodities
Real estate
Private equity
etc

To pile on Christopher comment above, you will also find several asset management firms that either specialize in managing certain asset classes (such as fixd income and equity) or that are global asset managers (and cover all the asset classes listed above).
