Eleanore’s Answer

Great to have a goal. Make sure you are setting yourself up for success. Becoming a manager is a lot of responsibilities and especially if it involves managing people. Ensure that you have the right skillsets and are ready to take on that responsibility as your ability to succeed will be dependent on your team and the relationship you have with your team.

Good luck.

Roopa’s Answer

Good Question Temitope. Like Adele said, its great to see you have a clear goal so early on.

In my view, every individual has their own career trajectory and journey. Some take several years and some take a handful to reach the role.

For you to become a manager (irrespective of the domain) focus on the following basic skills that are necessary

1: Strong Communication

2: Good Interpersonal skills

3: Understand & Develop Emotional Intelligence

4: Strategic Thinking

5: Active listening skills

Adelle’s Answer

Hi Temitope,

It's great to see you have such great goals already! This puts you ahead of the game.

Depending on what you want to manage, here are some ideas to help you rise to the top. Some things take time, but having the drive, experience, and know-how will help you move to the top quickly:

  • Show people what you know. Don't be afraid to "brag" a little so that your current management knows what you have been working on and what you have accomplished. Don't just expect them to know how great you are
  • Keep learning! Read, take courses, earn certifications. Never stop trying to improve!
  • Get feedback from your peers and your manager. Ask what you are doing well and what you may need to work on
  • Don't be afraid to go for it! Take chances

Once you can start doing these things, people will see your worth, and hopefully you will be in a great management position in no time.
