Beth’s Answer

I initially knew about my current company, because their product was a direct competitor to a product at my former company. (Often competing companies like to hire from each other, because of knowledge of the general area of business.) And I also had several former co-workers who went to work at my current company. So in networking with those people, I learned they had an opening I might be able to fill.

Beth recommends the following next steps:

Read all you can about the industry you are interested in... This is how you will start to recognize names of leading companies.
Google words/terms you don't understand. Google companies. Read those company's websites.
In or after college, set up you profile on LinkedIn. Connect with friends, professors, parents, parents' friends, friends of friends. Start to create a network who can help you grow in your career. Follow interesting people on LinkedIn to continuously expand your network and your knowledge.

Christina’s Answer

Hi David! I became quite familiar with the company that I am currently working for through their exceptional recruiting efforts at my college. Before joining the firm this past January, I was able to get a glimpse into the company’s culture through my participation in an externship and internship. In case you are not familiar with externships, it served as an opportunity for me to network with individuals from the firm for two days. Additionally, I received a tour of the office that I currently work in. I then participated in an internship program the following summer. Following the internship, I accepted my full- time offer with the firm. I learned about these two opportunities through my college’s career center. If you are enrolled in a college or university, I highly recommend you reach out to your school’s career center to learn about what connections they have with companies that might be of interest to you. Best of luck!
