I recommend that you see what kind of Internships you can do while you are in College. Attend any College Recruitment events that your college hosts and talk to some of these companies to see if they have Internship Programs or an Executive Training Program. Some companies have a robust Internship Program that partners with their College Recruitment to place Interns into jobs once they graduate if they are the right match for a position. If a company has an Executive Training Program I would apply for those as well if you are looking for something to do right out of College to gain experience. These Programs are usually geared to those who recently graduated from College. You will gain experience and have a development program that will help you grow for the future. Look at other companies than just Advertising Agencies too - there are a lot of Companies that have In House Advertising/Marketing depts that you can gain Advertising experience with. Wether an Internship or a Training Program do your research on the Company to see if it is a work culture you feel is a good match for you and find any feedback from others that have attended their programs to see if it has value -what are you learning and what is the growth potential - i.e. what will you be doing? actually contributing to projects or just a gofer? do their Internships lead to positions within that company - or other companies? what does the Training Program look like? what is your potential growth in company from a Training Program? etc.

There’s no one set answer. An internship is a valuable learning opp. If you have a lot of student debt to pay down, it’s okay to target a paying job. Key thing you want out of any internship is learning and networking. Always focus more broadly on a Marketing internship vs an advertising internship. Advertising is one (visible) piece of the marketing mix.

While you are in college it is very important to attend the Career Fair Days that are sponsored by the college. You should start attending early on and not wait until your Junior or Senior year. The reason for this is because this gives you time to develop a rapport with the various Companies. You will find that often times, some of the same Company representatives attend the college career fair days year after year; so developing a relationship is key to obtaining an internship, say over the summer break. Also, keep in mind that you want to dress business professional for the career fair days. Often most colleges have a wardrobe of suit jackets etc that you can borrow. Be prepared to ask questions as well as market yourself. By getting a jump on internships while you are in college will better prepare you to know what type of careers to pursue after college graduation.
