Gabriel’s Answer

Hi Aliyah,

Thanks for the question. Just about any business degree is going to give you exposure to a variety fields including accounting & finance, marketing, management, human resources, etc. Because there are so many options it can be difficult to select just one field.

To help you find the best choice you can:

Consider volunteering: Many people don't realize how many volunteer opportunities are out there. Non-profit agencies are always looking for volunteers to help them with everything from marketing to bookkeeping (accounting) to any number of things. You can check out VolunteerMatch.org to search for opportunities.

Read up: There is a great book called "The Ten Day MBA" written by Richard Silbiger. The book is written for people new to business and those with experience needing a refresher. It provides terrific insight into all of the primary areas of business and can give you good "day in the life" perspective on what it's like to work in certain fields.

These are just two options. Hopefully your school has a good guidance counselor who can point you to more resources in your area. If not, I would ask a lot of questions to the college admissions advisors of any school you are considering. Remember, though, that admissions advisors are basically salespeople so they will always paint a pretty picture for you. Ask them to show you data on how many graduates are employed 3, 6, 9, 12 months after graduation for example. You can also ask them to provide you with information on internship opportunities, etc.
