Diego’s Answer

I would say lying or being dishonest to your peers. People can make mistakes, sometimes expensive mistakes, that can cost heavily to your employer or colleagues. I have seen people fired not so much for the mistake, but for a poor attempt to cover it. Always own up all you do, and gain your peers' trust.

Thank you comment icon I'm glad that honesty remains the best policy in the working world. Thank you for the advice Mr. Puppin. Deana

NOT growing themselves in their position!

Some people grow comfortable where they are, and they stop continuously expanding their skillset and network. No matter what job you're at, whether you hate it or love it, make sure that you are learning something from it and benefiting it in some way. It would be a shame to just work somewhere, quit, and have nothing to gain from it! It would be a waste of time.

Always try to network with the people around you!

Hi Alisha!

The worst career mistake one can make is to take a major of study without thoroughly investigating it. When I was doing college recruiting, the most frustrating that I encountered was the graduate who found that when he/she was hired onto a job, the major he/she had studied was not what he/she though it was going to be.

He/she could have avoided this by talking to people in that field before choosing a major or taking advantage of coop, intern, and shadowing programs that would have allowed him/her to see the inside a job/career/major before making a decision. A job/career is like a closet. It looks one way on the outside, but when you go on the inside, it could look much different that one would expect.

Talk to your school counselor and your favorite teachers to see about learning about the inside of a career that you might be considering.

Best of lck! Please keep me posted. I would like to follow your progress!

Katherine’s Answer

I think the worst career mistake you can make is staying in a job that's comfortable and "easy" even though you're unhappy. I stayed at a job for longer than I should have for these reasons and while it wasn't all bad, my unhappiness was prevalent and I often felt like I was taking the easy way out. I am now at a job that I truly enjoy, and that also challenges me, and I really couldn't be happier.
