What majors are good for a future OB/GYN to take besides Pre-Med or Biology?

I'm asking because some colleges don't really have a Pre-Med program and I don't want to pursue a major as general as biology or chemistry. #college #doctor #healthcare #hospital-and-health-care

Mercy’s Answer

Well, first of all, you have to make yourself an attractive applicant to medical schools which involve a high GPA, some type of volunteer/work/research in the health field, and passing your MCATs. Nowadays, medical schools look for well rounded, high performing applicants so you could essentially do any major as long as you excel in it, have the sciences for the pre-med track completed and pass with high scores and have some experience or exposure to the health field. A suggestion to get the answer for this is to talk with the school's career counselor. He/she can guide you into the right direction. Also talk to medical schools admission's staff and see if they can give you some hints as to what they look for in their applicants. If you happen to volunteer, see if you can shadow or get in touch with an OB/GYN doc and find out what their journey to medical school was like. Since you have an interest in OB/GYN, find opportunities that will enrich your exposure to that field, i.e. volunteering/working in OB/GYN offices, or clinics, or doing research, etc. These interactions will help you figure out what you need to do to make yourself an attractive applicant for medical school. Hope this helps!

MICHAEL’s Answer

Grace, I would think it would be very important to be in pre-med if you want to become a doctor, but not vital. You may have to transfer to another college, if the do not offer any biology or Pre-Med courses.

Angela’s Answer

I have known people to take other science majors bedsides biology or chemistry. My primary doctor did pharmacology and my Gyne doctor was a nurse before they both become doctors. I know that others have majored in scientific research, as well as biomedical engineering. I hope this helps. Take care.
