In today's day and age, receiving an advanced degree, typically a Masters or a Doctorate, in a scientific discipline is what you need to become a scientist. Regardless of what field you choose, becoming a scientist means (1) developing a sense of curiosity strong enough to sustain you trough extended periods of experimental failure, (2) learning to remain objective of your own findings and (3) learning to carefully document and present your work to audiences from within as well as outside your field of expertise.
