Vernon’s Answer

The nation is filled with colleges and universities with excellent writing programs. The "creativity" is up to you, the author.

Depending on how you roll, Ivy League schools are always good for writers. They are expensive, but excellent; look good on the resume' too. I'm partial to Ohio's liberal arts colleges of which there are dozens. Certainly, Oberlin College is terrific.

Start researching independent websites for your topic and see what rolls out for you.

Hi Surayyah,
The best universities for screenwriting would be USC, UCLA and Chapman. The University of Washington was great about writing novels according to my cousin.
Best wishes.

David’s Answer

Hi Surayyah,

The schools listed above all have amazing/historic creative writing programs! In addition, many schools that you may not expect to have strong writing programs also offer great creative writing instruction. Even schools like MIT attract amazing fiction writers like Junot Diaz and more! I myself am a part of Stanford's CW program, where we have amazing writers like Tobias Wolff and Adam Johnson!

In addition to college programs, there are also many opportunities for you to begin receiving instruction in CW as a high school student. As a creative writer myself, there are a couple of programs for high school students that I remember applying to/attending.

The Iowa Young Writer's Studio is a great option for high school students looking to receive writing instruction from MFA students at the Univ. of Iowa (#1 Creative Writing Program in the nation). I personally attended the program and can attest to the major strides I made in my own writing in only 3 weeks.

Kenyon College (also mentioned by Reva in her advice above) also has a similar program for high school students looking to meet other writers.

Let me know if you have any other questions! Good luck with your writing!

Cheers,
David
