Do you have any suggestions on how I should go about choosing and completing my required honors courses?

I will be a freshman at Michigan State University to study civil engineering this fall. I have also been accepted into the Honors College at this school, which requires me to complete at least eight honors courses. I do not want to saddle myself with too many classes, but I also know that trying to do all of my honors courses later will be very difficult. It would be very helpful if I could get some suggestions on how to handle this situation, especially as I will be choosing my classes soon at my school's summer orientation.

My nephew graduated from MSU with a mechanical/logistics engineering degree. He now works for an international manufacturing company working with suppliers.

The best thing to do is contact MSU Engineering and ask them about the work load and requirement to complete 8 honors courses. They will be more than willing to help. They want there students to succeed. The first two years are mostly core classes and in my opinion quite hard because you are adjusting to college life. Taking too many honors courses could be a problem. Make sure you don't overload yourself. It would be a shame to "crash and burn" trying to do too much too fast. We need good engineers.

Good luck and Go Spartans!!!

Civil Engineering? I am a graduate Mechanical, MSc, King's College, London. Civil Engineers usually build stuff, roads bridges, dams, levees, etc. Try for honors in soils, earthquake prep., levees (Katrina in New Orleans for example), cost of failure and rebuilding, budgets, skyscraper vs. terrorist attach (9-11). Have fun:) Cheers

Hi McKenzie!

Congratulations on your achievements! I am sure that you will make a fine student. Here are some pointers that I wish I had when I went to MSU.

Here are some good tips on how to get good grades in engineering:

Get to know your RA and academic adviser and talk to them about the best way to study. Ask them about their assisting you to become aligned with an upperclassman in civil engineering to act as a mentor. it really helps to have someone who knows about the school, classes, professors, etc. It will really help to have help from someone who has completed at least the first year.

Best of luck! I would like to follow your progress!

Here is something that would be really, really helpful!!

Now, as soon as possible, contact the alumni relations office at MSU and ask to be put in contact with a graduate of the civil engineering program that lives or works near you. This would give you an opportunity to get to know an alum, what he/she does, and how they got there, and, most importantly, get from that person the pointers that will help you succeed in your first year. The alumni relations office would welcome your request because they are all about creating an MSU community!!!

Here is their website: Call them as soon as possible, do not email them, it will probably get lost and take longer for you to get assistance!!!!!!

Best of luck.
