You are required to have a bachelor's degree in computer science or you could have management information systems, information technology or any other related field. The courses that you take in those degrees equip you with software development, computer network security and computer programming skills. I would start at community college to save money and you might even end up just getting a few certificates from your chosen degree abs be able to get hired at a starting program to work your way up.

Tia’s Answer

Exposure to multiple different systems is a good place to start. You don't need in depth knowledge of various programming languages and system tools, you will learn that on the job, but you do need to understand how they are designed and their basic language rules. Don't limit yourself in college to take only the computer science courses. Take some Business and Accounting courses that mention in their description their use of a system or tool. Find community classes on computer programming languages, especially the older languages. I am working with a client whose system is in COBAL. Very few people use it anymore so my client pays a premium to those with the skills.
