[closed] How competitive is the field of office management?

Hello,

I am a college senior with a major of management, and a focus of administration. I am about to complete my bachelor's degree, and I look forward to working with management. I would like to know how competitive the field for management is. Will job seekers only be expected to have a degree, and if so, what can something do to put themselves ahead of the game? Do internships have a major impact on the success of applicants?

Thank you.

You will definitely want to look for ways to differentiate yourself from other candidates as this field will be competitive. Internship are a great first step, but I would not stop there. Look for ways to take on additional leadership roles during your final year of school. I always tell students do not be satisfied with just signing up for a team, project or committee. Take the extra step by taking on a leadership role within the team. Completing your degree and achieving a solid GPA is table stakes these days. In order to get ahead, you have to set yourself apart from the others. Make sure to get involved in the community and give back your time. Ensure that you are well rounded and find the right balance between class work, projects, community involvement, family and fun! They are all equally important. Good luck and hope this helps.

Hello,

Great inquiry. The reality is that you will likely not be hired directly into management unless you have working experience which qualifies you for the position. The degree in management ideally will help you become an effective leader as you move through your career and hopefully help position you for an opportunity to be a manager once you have the relevant experience. Competition to move into management roles is generally high. Several employees with more tenure and large networks of acquaintance in the given industry will also be trying to move forward in their careers. Those who do their jobs well, exhibit leadership traits and who network appropriately will generally have a better opportunity to move into a management role. I hope this helps. Best of luck!
