I want to be a pediatric doctor and I wanted to know if you've had a patient that was hard to deal with.

I'm Ms. Hill at the International Community School. My 4th graders have a few questions and I'd like to share your advice with them. Thanks in advance!

I am an ObGyn, and have had many patients that are challenging (patients are people first). As Ruth pointed out people who are sick are not at their best. I would broaden that to say many people have had bad experiences in healthcare settings and are under alot of stress. It is really important to take an extra minute to try to hear and understand why someone is struggling, and try to find a way to help them. Part of what makes being a doctor (or nurse) rewarding is when someone is struggling or in pain and you can help them. You can even get good at it!

Ruth’s Answer

I was a Pediatric Intensive Care Nurse and I had several challenging patients. Remember, when people are sick, they are not their best. Never take it personally. Always treat people the way you want to be treated. Be positive and supportive. You never know what a person is going through. Be respectful and keep a smile on your face.
