Jeanne’s Answer

Hey Jeff, from my friend who has worked for the Olympics and the Superbowl: There are more and more marketing jobs opening up in sports. However, getting a job at a team can be tough but there are lots of great alternatives to get similar experiences. Interning is always a good options since with sports, getting in the door anyway you can is helpful. There are also terrific marketing jobs at leagues, media companies (i.e. ESPN, YES) and at major sponsors of teams/leagues (Pepsi, AB, MasterCard etc.) Another option is working at a sports marketing agency that works with a number of different sports properties on different projects.

Thank you comment icon Okay, thanks Jeanne! I have been trying to look around and get internships. Thanks for the advice! Jeff

Joanna’s Answer

There definitely are. Something else to look into are schools that have sports management programs (University of Michigan, for example). This will supplement any other course of study with a deeper understanding of the business side of sports and there may be more resources and guidance available for jobs and internships!

Scott’s Answer

There are a ton of jobs related to sports marketing. Think about all of the marketing you see at an event. Someone has to sell that space. Someone designs the tickets, the logo for the team, and schedules all of the teams promotional events. There are a variety of ways to get involved.

Thank you comment icon Thanks Scott, I guess I never really thought about that! Jeff
Thank you comment icon No problem. If you are interested, you might want to contact a local minor league team and see if they need an intern or volunteer. Great way to get your foot in the door and learn. Scott Turner
Thank you comment icon Yeah, I have contacted my local soccer team, but they were full. I shall continue to look around! Jeff

Thomas’s Answer

Agree with earlier comments - sports mktg opportunities can be through teams/leagues, media or sponsors. Often, they are challenging to get since many people want to get into sports mktg. But with focus and experience (like internship), you should be able to break into the industry. As others allude to, you might also need to start small and work your way up. For example, starting with AA baseball, then AAA baseball, then MLB.

Eric’s Answer

To build on the sports marketing options I would look at GoPro or RedBull. There are many roles centered around athletes and sporting events.
