Hey Tai,

The world is wide open to where you can be your own boss. The question is, what service(s) do you want to offer people? Once you have question answered, then develop your strategy.

The Small Business Administration is a great resource to help you get started - www.sba.gov

Hope that helps.

It's easier to be your own boss in trade jobs such as plumber, electrician, lawn mower, etc, but it is also possible as a web designer or coder. All of the above involve entrepreneurial skills and will require you to build a client list, so you'll have to work really hard to get on people's radars.

I agree with Anthony. There's definitely the opportunity to be your own boss no matter what career field you aim for, but it's really all about the service you want to provide. If you're at all creative, graphic design is a common freelance job where you write your own rules, manage your work in your own way, and can get a variety of work from different clients. However, keep in mind any job where you are your own boss will require lots of work to promote your skills, bring in a steady flow of clients, gain trust and recognition with the public, and manage your time and workflow. Also, clients can be finicky, so ensure you ask for non-refundable deposits before you start any work to know that the client is serious about wanting you to work for them and have a contract and/or quote signed by your clients before you begin your work so that they are clear on your process and when they can expect you to complete the work. Also, it covers you in case they try to back out or say that you're not following through or providing the service they expected.
