Nursing has a lot of entry points. To become an RN, you need to complete a nursing degree and pass the NCLEX exam. For the nursing degree, you can complete an Associates Degree (2-3 years, ADN) or a Bachelor's Degree (4 years, BSN). There are also some programs where you can train to be a nurse after you complete a Bachelor's degree in another non-nursing field. These are usually accelerated BSNs (A-BSN) or direct entry Master's degrees (DE-MSN). The benefit of the higher degrees is that they usually offer more opportunities for advancement in the field and higher pay. The drawback is, obviously, more time and more money is needed to earn your nursing degree. However, some nursing roles, like Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Anesthetist require a Master's or an Advanced Practice (APRN) degree so depending on your ultimate goals, the Bachelor's or Master's degree might make the most sense for you after high school. The nice thing about nursing, in my opinion, is that there are many programs that allow nurses to work toward the next higher degree, so if you get an ADN and then decide you want the BSN so that you have greater skills, opportunities, and salary, you can find an RN-to-BSN program to advance in your career. If you do the BSN and later decide you would like a Master's, there are many BSN-to-MSN programs and some are online so you can continue working while getting your degree.

Nurses are the members of the healthcare team that spend a lot of time on direct patient care. In the hospital, they are the ones doing the day-to-day care like bathing, changing bandages, and administering medications. Where physicians tend to focus on what is wrong with the body and how to fix it, nurses tend to think about all of a patient's physical, emotional, and social needs. You have to like being very hands-on while caring for other people to be a successful nurse.

Congratulations on your upcoming birthday! I hope this next year is a great one!

Hey Jozelyn,

Here is a link that gives you an outlook on becoming an RN - https://www.mynextmove.org/profile/summary/29-1141.00

You can click on the tabs in the Education section to look up further information.

Also, check out some RN schools in your area and speak with an Admissions Rep to see if you can conduct an informational interview with someone on staff to gain their insight and advice.

Also, you can type in Youtube - a day in the life of a Registered Nurse.

Hope that helps
