What are the chances of making it into the Sports management side for a career if I do not make it as a pro golfer?

I am currently a golfer and hope to pursue golf for a college while getting a degree in either Entertainment/ Entrepreneurship or Engineering. #professional

Mitchell, follow what makes you happy. Sports management is a wide field with many opportunities to find your niche. It doesn't always mean becoming a General Manager; you could become a Marketing Director, Sales Manager, or work in the Front or Back Office. Your college major won't necessarily decide your career path. As a golfer, you might manage a big country club or resort. You could also work for sports networks or organizations like the PGA. Use college to build a strong foundation in your area of interest. Look for internships and career events to help you focus. Your college might offer entry-level positions that can help you gain experience and build your resume. I knew several college friends who worked on the grounds, in the front office, and at the stadium. They turned those experiences into bigger roles after college and with professional teams.

I would just like to let you know that It’s a common misconception that graduating with a sports management degree means you’re on the fast track to a job as General Manager of your favorite Major League baseball team, but nothing could be further from the truth. It’s important to be realistic about your goals, and understand whether or not a sports management degree can help you get there, but the truth is, you don’t have to have it all figured out the day you complete your application. Most sports enterprises are advancing toward a data driven business model, where analytics and advanced statistics play a major role in decision making.Undergraduate programs can’t possibly dedicate the time necessary to understanding the intricacies of sports analytics, but the proper advanced program can, especially when they work in conjunction with a professional team.If you have a love of sports, don’t give up on it just because you’re glory days of pep rallies and buzzer beaters are in the rear view mirror, there is a whole world of opportunities out there and a sports management degree can help you find your new truth.Good luck!
