Hi Carlos,

I'd say it depends a) what kind of creative writing you do and b) on luck.

I received an undergraduate degree and a masters degree in creative writing for poetry. With poetry, it's pretty impossible to make a living only by writing. Even those I know who have published well-received poetry books have main jobs they use to support themselves. However, many have found successful jobs, some in areas related to writing - publishing or teaching for example - and many in areas that have nothing to do with writing (I do data analysis!).

If you write fiction or screenplays, there is a chance you could make a living with your writing, but it's pretty rare. I know many people who have published novels and almost all of them still have jobs (many in academia as professors or teachers).

That said, I am really happy I pursued writing and I am definitely happy with my current career. If you want to be a writer, I'd suggest hedging your bets. Try to also explore something besides writing that's a bit more marketable - this might also provide interesting ideas for your work. And work on being disciplined. If you can find time to work on your writing while also pursuing additional study, it will be good preparation for pursuing writing while working a non-writing job.

Hi Carlos, I work with writers on a daily basis. I will have them answer your question, since they will have a better perspective than I. -Vivian
