That’s awesome, David.
Being a musician myself, I think It’s great you’re already thinking ahead!

To become a music producer, start by learning the basics of music theory and sound mixing, and try using software like FL Studio, Ableton Live, or Logic Pro to make your own beats. You don’t need a fancy setup at first, just experiment, collaborate with friends, and keep improving your sound. Later, you can study music production or audio engineering in college to sharpen your skills and build connections in the industry.

I suggest that if you want to be a music producer, and if you have no experience: get an inexpensive Apple Mac. It comes with a program called Garageband on it. You can start producing music immediately with it. Listen to music: listen on good headphones; listen in the car; listen on good studio monitors (for $120 or so, you can get a set of M-Audio Studiophile monitors which are a great first set). Place your monitors about 2 feet left and right of your computer and point them at you (there's a more scientific way to do this, but that will get you started). Get on YouTube and seek out interviews with Deadmau5 and Skrillex where they talk about actually putting songs together. Search out Butch Vig on YouTube and listen to what he has to say about recording Nirvana and Garbage and everyone else he has worked with. Look at the YouTube channel Pensado's Place - TONS of good information there in every episode. Most importantly, even if you don't get a Mac, start producing music recordings! There is no certification to become a producer - just go for it.
