What are some tips to becoming a social media influencer? What are more ways to put myself out there to gain more followers and engagement on socials?

Hey Madi,
I've been an influencer for almost 12 years and currently run B2B influencer marketing at Dell. My advice is to find a niche or topic you are passionate about. Something you could write endlessly about, or shoot video about and you never get bored!
Understand your audience & provide value with all your content
Create high quality video and photos (iPhones can do this)!
Don't be afraid to take risks & try new things
Focus on 1-2 social channels first and build your brand there
Connect with creators either local or online (share best practices and build your network)

Be consistent with content and keep up with the trends. It may take some time to get notice or you can go viral off of one video. But staying consistent on multiple platforms and getting notice on one can really boost up your views.

Many influencers share their journey on social media platforms like Instagram, Youtube and Tik Tok. As transparency has become something many people look for, influencers have started to be transparent about breaking into the field, their income and so on. I would encourage you to find influencers who are in the same area that you want to be in (e.g. fashion, hair, gaming, etc.). From there, you can see how they broke into the field.
Other than that, some tips that I always hear for influencers are: be consistent, interact with your audience, and have a niche.

Just be yourself and show off your personality/interests. Posting consistently may help boost engagement and viewership as well! Focusing on more specific areas might be easier and allow you to really focus on those things so you can later use what you learned about growing that area and apply it to more. If you are truly focused and determined, and giving your best effort, it's only a matter of time before getting noticed!

As an influencer myself, I think I could provide some good insight into your journey to become one as well. First and foremost, I would say that you should try and choose a niche that you would like to focus on (e.g., fashion, fitness, food blogging). Sticking to one niche and consistently providing great content on this topic will help to keep your content organized and provide your followers the specific content they are looking for. In terms of posting, Instagram's algorithm changes every so often (currently reels are providing accounts great visibility), so try and post photos as well as reels and stories. The more content the better (and be consistent with the content, post daily if possible!!!). Also, when posting content, try and keep the quality of the images / videos to the best that's possible. Clean, quality images and videos are more alluring to people, and this will provide yourself to gain more followers. iPhone's these days have amazing cameras, but there are also DSLR cameras that can capture some amazing images. Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom are incredible editing programs to touch up your photos. When posting your content, provide great information in the posts as well - e.g., if you're starting a cooking channel, provide easy-to-follow steps on how to cook what you're cooking, with ingredients involved, the time it takes to cook the food etc.... The more specific the information, the more valuable it will be to your followers. Lastly, HAVE FUN. I can't stress this enough, but you need to enjoy what you're doing, and also, know that it takes a lot of time to gain a following and receive a lot of engagement. Please be patient in this journey. I would really focus on posting as often as you can across the various platforms you're a member of but be careful to balance frequency with quality. Post things that you enjoy and are proud of so that your content quality stays strong.
Another tip I would suggest is to engage with other creators' content. Commenting on other posts, sharing other content you find interesting, and engaging the wider community on social media is a great way to start gaining a following.
