Is it difficult to become an Architect?

I’m really interested in becoming one. I know that no career choice is easy but how much math is involved? Would anyone recommend it? Anything would be helpful.

Sheila’s Answer

Hi Jaden:

According to my research, an Architect plan and design houses, factories, office buildings, and other structures. Here's some basic info to help you get off the ground and further your research. . . .

■ DUTIES ■

• Architects discuss with clients the objectives, requirements, and budget of a project. In some cases, architects provide pre-design services, such as feasibility and environmental impact studies, site selection, cost analyses, and design requirements.

• Architects develop final construction plans on the initial proposal after discussing with clients. The architects’ plans show the building’s appearance and details of its construction. These plans include drawings of the structural system; air-conditioning, heating, and ventilating systems; electrical systems; communications systems; and plumbing. Sometimes, landscape plans are included as well. In developing designs, architects must follow state and local building codes, zoning laws, fire regulations, and other ordinances, such as those requiring reasonable access for people with disabilities.

• Architects use computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) and building information modeling (BIM) for creating designs and construction drawings. However, hand-drawing skills are still required, especially during the conceptual stages of a project and when an architect is at a construction site.

■ HOW TO BECOME AN ARCHITECT ■

There are typically three main steps to becoming a licensed architect:
1) Completing a bachelor’s degree in architecture
2) Gaining relevant experience through a paid internship
3) Passing the Architect Registration Examination

■ EDUCATION ■

• Architects typically need a bachelor's degree in architecture. Most architects earn their degree through a 5-year Bachelor of Architecture degree program. Many earn a master’s degree in architecture, which can take 1 to 5 additional years. The time required depends on the extent of the student’s previous education and training in architecture.

• A typical bachelor’s degree program includes courses in architectural history and theory, building design with an emphasis on computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), structures, construction methods, professional practices, math, physical sciences, and liberal arts. . . . Best of luck to you! 🏘

Andrew’s Answer

In a way, one can visualize the task of an architect to be not dissimilar to that of a civil engineer. Of course, an architect would be a lot more concern with design and beauty of the outcomes.

That said, a definite competency in mathematics, again, is close to that requires for a civil engineer, would be required. If you are in high school, it is imperative that you complete successfully both Algebra I and Algebra II. I you have the opportunity, try AP Precalculus, and AP Calculus AB and BC. That would put you in a strong position for your future college degree in architecture.

As far as I know if you are a college student majoring in architecture, you will need to learn a lot of math and you will need to have good manual skills such as drawing designs and building models.....

Prajwal’s Answer

Architecture is great Profession, In any field finding a mentor is very important. My suggestion would be to find someone who excelled in the field and work for him as an intern, don't solely depend on college education.
