Kgotso, I understand how you feel. first I would suggest you take certification courses, join and register with an association related to your field like the medical rehabilitation association. These boast your career opportunities.
If you would like to travel outside your country I suggest you check Australia because Prosthesis and orthosis are on the occupation list for visas.

Thank you

Maha’s Answer

It's true that the job market in our field can be challenging, but there are several ways to increase your chances of employment, especially if you're considering opportunities abroad.

1. Networking: Building strong relationships with professionals in the field, professors, and seniors can open unexpected doors. In my case, I got my first job just after my graduation through a recommendation from my seniors. Later, when I wanted a change, I actively looked for a new position and got chosen the same day.

2. Skill Development: Employers value candidates who continuously improve. Consider getting additional certifications, attending workshops, and staying updated on advancements in O&P.

3. Internships & Volunteering: Gaining hands-on experience during or after your studies, even if unpaid, can make you stand out.

4. Global Opportunities: Some countries have a higher demand for orthotists and prosthetists. Research licensing requirements, professional associations, and job openings in places like Canada, the UK, Germany, or Australia.

5. Personal Initiative: Don’t rely solely on job listings—reach out directly to clinics, manufacturers, and rehabilitation centers. Many opportunities come through proactive engagement rather than waiting for openings.

Even though my journey into the workforce happened quickly, I know that being prepared and adaptable makes a huge difference. If you're passionate and determined, opportunities will come your way!

Maha recommends the following next steps:

Research professional associations like ISPO or job platforms such as O&P Careers for international opportunities.
Look into licensing and certification requirements for countries with high demand.
Reach out to professionals or alumni working abroad for insights and guidance.

Onyedi’s Answer

Aside from certificate courses, related association network and volunteer service to boast your career opportunities, I would suggest you dive into the technology aspect of your career to give yourself an added advantage and also improve your skill Incase you end up in a more technological countries who's ways or practice to medicine is by technology approach.
If you can learn just about everything there is to know about something and you have a skill for problem solving and you have great listening skills as well , you can become successful in Orthotists and prosthetists.
