Adding to Kit's answer - getting familiar with the tools that are used in the industry helps you to align yourself in the right direction. Another thing that would help is going through the descriptions of job postings of popular game studios. The postings usually talk about the tools/educational qualifications required for the job.

Hi Michael, I would recommend the best credentials are an internship with a game company. Nothing beats experience. If you don't have experience in this field, I encourage you to cold call and volunteer your time. The experience as well as the relationships you build will probably by the most invaluable assets to take you to the next level. Furthermore you never know who you will encounter while cold calling that may lead to a job.
