Mary Beth’s Answer

A good education in pediatric care. Knowledge of pediatric pharmacology and interactions, nutrition and impact on growth and development, understanding of ‘ages and stages’ of development.
Ongoing education in pediatric issues, even if you have never worked in a pediatric setting…shows your passion.
Volunteer history working with children in any setting is a good idea.
Working with Pediatrics is different that working with any adults. Kids are NOT mini adults, ever. They do not react to treatments, medications, or any intervention as adults do. You need more education, and not just a desire, to be an excellent and safe pediatric nurse.

Carolyn’s Answer

Any pediatric hospital or pediatric unit in a regular adult hospital is going to want to see a desire to work with children and previous experience doing so. This can come in SO many ways- babysitting, being a camp counselor, taking care of younger siblings, volunteering in a doctor's office or pediatric hospital, being a swim instructor for children, the list is never ending. As long as you show interest and previous experience in working with children and the ability to communicate within their various developmental stages, you'll be a marketable candidate.

Hi Melony !

Volunteer work is always a good idea for your resumé and.... for the experience you will earn ! You will need the confidence when the parents will ask you if you have children, they consider this as a requirement but it is not !

I have worked in summer camps and did a lot of babysitting before working as a pediatric nurse !

Good luck and enjoy your future work !
