The sooner the better is my recommendation. If you have some idea of what college or career path you might want to follow early in your high school time would be a great time to start your research and investigation. As you do your research you might come up with some ideas that might change your mind and therefore starting early in your high school days would give you more time and make you feel less stressed. Best of luck!!

Great question. The simple answer is it is never too early to start thinking about what you want to do for a career. It is good to start asking yourself what do you want to do after you graduate high school no later than during your sophomore or junior years. That is because it gives you time to explore after you have narrowed down your list of career interests. You can join clubs and take classes in high school that align with those interests to learn more about those careers and see if you truly enjoy the subject and the related work.

After you have narrowed down your list of possible career interests you should ask yourself what education and experience are required to enter those professions. Some jobs require advanced college degrees while others require a 4 or 2 year degree or no college degree at all. Having an understanding of what you want to do for a career and what education is required allows you then to think through what you have to do after high school. Trade schools, apprenticeships or college are all potential paths depending on your desired field. Once you have a sense for what you want to do for a living you can look and see what schools offer programs in that subject. If your path requires college I recommend you start by researching which public colleges and universities in the state you live in offer programs in your desired field of study as public schools in your state generally are the least expensive path to a college degree.

Please note that most colleges will want you to start the application process in the Fall of your senior year of high school. Many colleges require certain SAT or ACT test scores as well as certain high school classes in order to be admitted so starting your planning as a high school sophomore or junior gives you time to prepare to meet those college entrance requirements.

Think of this as a journey where you will learn more about potential careers and yourself as you go along. What interests you as a sophomore may not be your top interest as a junior. Starting early gives you more opportunity to discover what you truly want and prepare yourself to achieve that goal. If this feels like a huge decision please understand that lots of people, including me, get nervous at this stage. Just focus on making the best decision for you based on the information you have and keep refreshing your plans as you go along. You got this!!!

When I was a junior in high school, I began looking seriously at colleges. Regarding Careers - ask yourself what you love to do every day. Maybe it is math, history, or science and technology. Me, I love traveling Internationally so I looked at Careers where I would have the ability to explore different cultures, learn and grow!

I love that you have a favorite school already in mind - Empire Beauty School. I have linked their events - it looks like they just had an open house, did you have a chance to attend? https://www.empire.edu/landing-pages/visit-empire?v=social-openhouse

What program interests you most?
COSMETOLOGY
ESTHETICS / AESTHETICS
EDUCATOR TRAINING
NAIL TECHNOLOGY

Let me know ... I look forward to hearing back from you.
