Developing a relationship with your boss is going to vary just as much as building a relationship with anyone, the difference is that they are _supposed_ to interact with you. If they aren't they are likely a bad boss.
That said, one of the best ways to build a positive relationship with your boss is to figure out what they see as important, and support them by making sure that you treat it as important as well. Work to make sure that you are taking care of that problem, and giving them the information/doing the task/focusing whatever attention needed on that.
If they care that the work is properly documented? Make sure your documents are done well.
If they care that the backlog of work is cleared daily, even if the documentation is poor? Clear out the backlog!
etc
This is something you have to re-learn with each boss you interact with, and really this is just a focus on understanding someone else's motivations, which is very helpful with most work relationships.
