Make sure you ask open ended questions to potential mentors. "What would you do if you where me and wanted to be successful" "Who is a good mentor for achieving my career goals?" Networking can always lead to the next step. Dont get discouraged and ask alot of questions and work hard. Make people want to introduce you to other people hiring up the career ladder. Your reputation for hard work will be important.

That depends on you, there are as many design opportunities and varing situation depending on the needs of an employer or company. If you feel pigeon holed and not allowed to stretch your creative rubber band move on and do it quickly so you don't waste valuable time finding your place to shine.
