Drawing abilities: Drawing is the foundation of animation, and having good drawing abilities is a prerequisite for anyone aiming to be an animator. In order to create realistic characters and settings, one must have a solid grasp of proportion, anatomy, and perspective.
Computer Skills: With the advancement of technology, most animation work is now done on computers. Animators must be skilled in a variety of software programmes, including Adobe After Effects, Autodesk Maya, and Adobe Premiere Pro.
Animators work in teams and must be able to successfully explain their ideas. Collaboration with team members and pitching ideas to clients both require effective communication skills.

In animation, there are 2 major 'camps' 2D animation and 3D animation. Within 2D animation, you have puppet-based 2D animation and hand-drawn animation. Hand-drawn requires draftsmanship skills where as puppetry its more like a nice-to-have. 3D animation is also sort of like puppetry but can also bridge into motion-capture cleanup.
The main skills for all animation, 2D, 3D, and even motion graphics are a foundation in the 12 principles. There are many youtube videos on this subject. I would also pick up a copy of Richard Williams' Animation Survival Kit.

To add to the answers already given, I would recommend watching Sir Wade Neistadt on YouTube. He will give you so much knowledge on animation and give you a huge advantage if you are just beginning.
