What can I do to start having a strong art portfolio for art school before I transfer?
Hi! I am a student at community college who’s in a studio art major but has planned to go to art school, specifically art schools that are near me and are well-known for their animation programs like SVA, CalArts, and Moore College of Art and Design. However, I am stuck on how to make a portfolio that could help impress the admissions team of these schools and could showcase my work better. I was thinking of doing stuff that is not shown in sketchbooks much like pop-ups and flip-able pages like the ones in children’s books but I’m not so sure. Any advice or recommendations for a beginner?

What factors should I consider when deciding if attending art school is worth the financial risk, or if I should explore other paths to incorporate my passion into a career?
I’ve always been passionate about pursuing a career in game and animation arts, but my current school doesn’t offer specialized courses in this field. I’ve considered transferring to an art school to get the training I need, but given my financial situation, it feels like a big risk. I want to make the best decision for my future—whether that means finding alternative ways to develop my skills, or choosing a major or minor that allows me to incorporate my passion in a practical way. Any advice on how to navigate this decision?

What if you could have marine and animal biologists help out with your thesis film?
Hi, this was something I was thinking about while being in the bathroom but thought it would be an interesting question to ask (haha.) This question is focused on making an animated film in an art school for animation. I was wondering if I were to do an animated thesis film on otters or just aliens that look like otters, could I have biologists and scientists tutor/help me with accuracy and representation on said species? What could be good ideas on otters to make for said films? Would be interested to hear your thoughts.

How do you handle the tight deadlines and high pressures of being a character animator?
Hello there! I'm a soon to be college freshmen for character animation, and I've always been fascinated by the animation industry as a whole, especially the behind scenes part of the animation industry. I've seen many a documentary on the ins and outs of working on big name films and characters, but it seems like for a lot of the higher end studios, they place incredibly tight deadlines and guidelines for their animators. How do you manage to create a good work life balance with the pressures of the studios deadlines?
For those people that do animation, whether it's as a hobby or a career, what's it like? And how do you reach your audience faster?
I'm really determined to becoming one myself, but I'm also scared, the main reason being because I see a lot of people doing it on social media, and I feel like I wouldn't reach out because they have a better head start at doing it than me. It makes me feel like I won't succeed if I continue to pursue this dream.
Do industries still care for hand drawn animation?
I love animation and just drawing in general. I just really had to ask if industries still care for hand drawn animation. All I have recently seen is 3D animation or live action films or series. Is it still worth it to learn to animate by hand? I'm taking an Animation 2 class, my teacher hasn't really taught us much. It's the same thing as last year with Digital Media/Animation 1 that's why I'm trying to teach myself. What industries still care for this type of animation? I'm asking because I'm not exactly sure if industries still care about it as much as I do. Should I still try to learn animation? I was planning to keep learning on my own once I graduated, but I'm not sure. #Spring25
