Medical Lab Technician (MLT) is a two year degree. With experience you test to specialize in one area and become a subject matter expert for that one area. Working in Microbiology, our MLTs specialize in Microbiology which also includes Parasitology, Mycology, some Molecular as well as Microbiology. As an MLT you can specialize in anything, but in most healthcare settings you will never be able to become a supervisor or manager in today's laboratory settings. To do that you must go on to earn your MLS by getting a BS/BA degree and then taking/challenging the MLS certification. With the MLS certification you can then become team leader, supervisor, specific lab manager, multilab manager or general lab manager. Additionally, you can work your way up to middle management or upper management if you add a master's degree. Hope this helps.

Jonathan’s Answer

How do you define "Medical Technician?" If the career goal is working in a lab prepping specimens for analysis, then explore educational programs in clinical lab science/medical technology. If the career goal is passing medications to senior citizens in a retirement facility, you may be thinking "medication technician. If the career goal is patient care then patient care technician, nurse's aid or medical assistant are programs offered by career and community colleges. Paramedic is another option. Phlebotomy skills will provide opportunities in clinical research. Nursing is another option: LPN/LVN, RN, BSN, MSN, DNP, PhD
