Doug’s Answer

I felt the urge to write from an early age. I'd write greeting card messages, lyrics for songs, and stories that came to mind. Interestingly, I didn't take writing seriously—as a potential profession—until after college. Writing always came easily to me, as well as did research.

I suggest that you write anything that you're inspired to express and in any way that comes naturally to you. This can be a book, blog, social media post, poetry, play, movie script, article, research report, website content, or anything else. Tell a story. Use your imagination. Share what you write with others.

Doug recommends the following next steps:

Even when you don't feel inspired to write, force youself to at least write something. This teaches you to take your writing seriously and to know you can break through "writer's block."

Devon’s Answer

Of course. I tend to write better if there's some incentive in it for me, so applying to writing contests or literary journals would be an excellent way to motivate yourself.
