Clara’s Answer

Hi Cierra,

Typical career routes will be private or public accounting. In simple language, private accounting is doing financial reporting or tax filing for corporations, whereas public accounting is kind of like checking a corporation's financial reporting or doing its tax filing with some degree of independence. Public accounting also includes tax, transaction services (help with accounting issues when two companies merge, or undergo major changes), etc. Even within the tax practice, there is more than just filing for tax. You can be examining tax laws and give advice to your client to be tax efficient.

Unconventional but popular career choices include consulting, especially when you have a second major in statistics or business analytics.

Josh’s Answer

Hi Cierra,

There are many different subdivisions of Accounting. Some of the most well known areas, are Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Tax and Audit. Depending on what you would like to major in you could do a lot of different things, as some company's combine some of this areas together due to the small nature of their business, while larger firms have these areas split into more distinctive sectors of business. In the end it will be up to you what area of Accounting you would prefer to work in, but there are a lot of opportunities and possibilities to grow and learn new things.

Good Luck!

With an accounting degree and having a career in with a public accounting firm, you will have access to a broad range of other jobs. Firstly, within a public accounting firm, you can transfer within lines of services from tax to audit to consulting, to internal firm operations, etc. If you do decide to leave the firm, I have seen individuals leave to not only work in accounting (CFO, Controllers, financial analysts) but to also become real estate/commercial real estate agents, nurses and teachers .
