If my ultimate goal is to become a lawyer, what is the best major for me to chose?

I've been bombarded with fliers for dozens of colleges telling me to apply, but I'm not sure what to apply for! I'm looking for some direction...

Thank you comment icon I recommend looking up one of the best 4 year colleges in your area specifically for law and look at the rating and student reviews Temaya

You can choose any major! If you know what type for lawyer you want to be then maybe pick a major relevant to that. I did accounting and it is a great background but I dont think ill be a tax lawyer or anything.

I'm a lawyer and you can have any major to go to law school so choose one that is interesting to you and go for it! Many lawyers have an undergrad degree in something like history or political science because lawyers tend to be people who like to read and write. I was an American History major with minors in English and Political Science. But I know lawyers who were accounting majors, or actuaries, or business and everything else. Also, some law degrees allow you to get another graduate degree at the same time, like a joint JD/MBA or a joint JD/Psychology Ph.D . If you're interested in a joint program like that, think about what undergrad degree you need for the second degree because anything can lead to a law degree.

My son is applying to colleges right now and I know what you mean about the amount of mail you're receiving! Last night we were told by a college admissions representative that thinking about whether a school encourages or discourages undecided applicants can help a student decide whether that school is a good fit for a student. For example, some schools don't even allow declared majors in applications so everyone is undecided. Other schools require application into a particular major or school. So if you don't know what you want to do, or if you do know what you want to do, think about looking for schools that are already aligned in that direction.

Good luck - this is an exciting time for you!
