What steps do I need to take to become someone that helps our environment?

I want to become someone that helps the environment (by making things like decomposable styrofoam). The problem is I don’t know where to start. I’m a freshman in high school going on sophomore year, and I feel like there’s more stuff that I can do in my high school years that could help me find out exactly what I want to do, but I don’t know what those things are or if they’re even available. Is there any way you can help?

Kimberly’s Answer

It's wonderful to witness your excitement and eagerness to create a beneficial effect on our planet. Throughout your high school journey, you can engage in various activities to discover and follow your passion for eco-friendly solutions, such as creating materials that break down naturally. Here are a few tips to guide you on your path:

Kimberly recommends the following next steps:

Research and learn: Take the time to educate yourself about environmental issues, sustainable technologies, and ongoing efforts in the field. Explore topics like renewable energy, waste management, eco-friendly materials, and current initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact. Online resources, books, documentaries, and reputable news sources can provide valuable information and insights.
Look for environmental clubs, groups, or organizations in your high school or local community. These groups often organize activities, projects, and events related to environmental conservation and sustainability. Joining such groups will allow you to connect with like-minded individuals, learn from experienced environmentalists, and participate in hands-on initiatives.
Look for local volunteer opportunities related to environmental conservation. This could include participating in beach cleanups, tree planting initiatives, or working with local conservation organizations. Volunteering will provide you with practical experience, exposure to environmental issues, and an opportunity to make a positive impact in your community.
Reach out to professionals working in the environmental field or related industries. Attend environmental conferences, seminars, or workshops in your area if possible. Building connections with professionals in the field can provide guidance, mentorship, and potential opportunities for internships or research projects.
Look into university programs or majors related to environmental science, environmental engineering, sustainable materials, or similar fields. Understanding the educational paths available will help you plan your academic journey and set goals for your future studies.
