What would a career in fashion advertising be like?

I know for sure that I have always wanted to have a career in the fashion industry (outside of designing), and I have recently become interested in advertising. I was hoping to find out what the field of advertising would look like within the fashion industry.

Hi Sophia,

Nice to meet you this way! There are many careers in fashion outside of just designing, so you definitely have a lot of options! You should definitely consider Marketing careers within fashion, which include advertising, as well as some of the following:

  1. Social Media Marketing - As you probably know, social media is very important today, and all the fashion brands want to communicate with their customers and fans through platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Pinterest, etc. As a Social Media Marketer, you help figure out a fashion brand's social media strategy, voice and content to increase followers and engagement.

  2. Advertising/ or Acquisition Marketing - By working in Advertising, or Acquisition Marketing, you are helping a brand gain new customers by designing and placing advertisements in magazines, billboards, TV and online. Online advertising has become a particularly important area, and includes placing ads on Facebook (those ads you see on the right of the page), Google, or display or banner ads on articles that you read.

  3. Retention Marketing - By working in Retention Marketing, you are helping a company get their existing customers to buy again (versus Acquisition Marketing is to get brand new customers). Retention marketing can include 1) email marketing - sending emails to your existing customers with updates on new products and sales, and 2) catalog marketing - sending catalogs by mail to your existing customers with updates on products and sales.

  4. PR (public relations) - In PR, you would help a fashion brand get press such as coverage in fashion magazines, newspapers and TV shows. You would also help get the fashion brand's products on celebrities. You will be frequently reaching out to fashion editors, explaining why your products are special and should be featured in their publication. For many fashion brands, this is very important to building an attractive brand to customers.

Hope this is helpful!
