When in my education is it best to take a gap year?

I want to serve a mission for church (I can only go once I'm 19) but I want to be able to still get a Ph.D or MD #research #LDS

"Gap year" typically refers to the time between finishing high school and starting some kind of post-secondary education (college, technical school, etc.). And I think that's the best time to take a gap year...for many reasons - which mostly depend on the individual student. Some students simply need a break from academics, some aren't really ready for the rigor of college work and/or don't have the maturity and self-discipline college often takes. Still yet, other students really don't know what kind of career or occupation they want to pursue yet. Not knowing what degree you want or career you want isn't really a great reason for a gap year in and of itself. Most students are taking core courses the first year or two -courses that most all students have to take before heading on into their specific major course work. There are lots of good reasons to take gap years..... all if which you should talk over with family and friends. I'd suggest also talking with some students who have taken a gap year that then went on to college. Get some first hand stories and experiences to help you make your decision. Your high school guidance counselor or the local college career office should be able to help you with this. Best of luck!

Debra recommends the following next steps:

Visit HS guidance counselor or college career office to help find other gap year students to talk to.

Hi there,

I have a friend who just finished a mission and she did it while she was still in college. She went during her sophomore year of college. It will not affect your chances of getting into graduate school. As long as you finish the required courses, you will be okay. Good luck!
