What would the best way to go being realistic or follow our dreams in one's career?

Some people's opinion is what matters the most, but its better what one believes than someone else's

Hi! Chiming in from 2026 :) Gabriela- This is a great question and one I know many people struggle with—I certainly have at different points in my own journey. Over time, I’ve come to realize that being realistic and following your dreams shouldn’t be viewed as an either/or decision. In my experience, the most sustainable careers are built by balancing the two.

It’s important to listen to advice from others—especially people with experience—but listening to advice and acting on it are two very different things. Welcoming opinions doesn’t mean you’re required to follow them. If something doesn’t feel right to you, it’s okay to pause, reflect, or choose a different path.

That said, advice can still be incredibly valuable. Hearing different perspectives helps you make more informed decisions, and often it’s not one single piece of advice that matters most—but a combination of insights from several people that helps you see a clearer path forward.

Careers evolve over time. What starts as a practical choice can lead you closer to something you genuinely enjoy, and what feels like a dream today may look different a few years from now. Being realistic doesn’t mean letting go of your dreams—it means moving toward them thoughtfully, with curiosity, self-trust, and flexibility along the way.

Hi Gabriela, thanks for submitting a question! This is definitely a question that you have to decide for yourself. I answered a similar question in regards to someone's dream of starting their own business or working for another company. I hope this helps:

"Once you get to college, I would apply for internships or co-ops. Get experience in what you want to do. I had a friend in college that thought he knew what he wanted to do so he got an internship with a great company and didn't like the way they ran things. So when he graduated, he started his own company and it took awhile to get it off the ground, but he's happy with his decision!

On the other had, I have another friend who went into college wanting to be an entrepreneur, but before starting his own company. He's working for a company that does similar work to what he wants his business to provide. Down the road he plans to take the experiences and knowledge he gained from his current company and apply it to make his own business.

I'm sure there's other options too, but I would attend college, apply for internships, and decide once you've seen more!"

Gabriela--In the end, I would say you should always follow your dream, it just might not be a direct path.

Hope this helps and best of luck!
