I would like to know will there be jobs available to teach mathematics at the community college level when I graduate in 2022?

I always think that there are lots of job openings for teaching math; but, I don't want to make an assumption based on false information. #mathematics

Adam’s Answer

Brandy, this is always a hard question to ask. With the current job market and the way fields are going you may want to go the route of applied math or statistics. With the growing demand for Data Scientists if you take your math skills and learn statistics and computer programming with them you can find a job at a community college or even a 4 year college as well.

Adam recommends the following next steps:

Take theoretical math courses.
Try some programming.
Take probability and statistics.

Drew’s Answer

There will always be jobs for mathematics teachers at all levels. I'm guessing you are entering college now and expect to graduate with a Bachelors degree in 2022. If so, you may have an opportunity to pursue a Master's degree while teaching. At some colleges that will qualify you to teach some junior level math courses.

Demographics will be the only factor that could vary the opportunities. That is too unpredictable for my projections. Birth rates for the years 4-8 after you were born may be important. But, that will be modified by immigrants and the increasing need for more college graduates as a portion of the population. Now only about 26% of Americans have college degrees.

Drew recommends the following next steps:

Look up mathematics teachers in the Occupational Outlook Handbook. They may have a guess about demographics.
