If you want to fly, I don't think you can do any better than applying to the Air Force Academy or to the Naval Academy. It's a real challenge to get into, and you have to be aware of and support the idea that you are making a commitment in the service of your country, but they will literally pay for your entire college education, plus a salary, plus room and board and clothing, AND they will have a job waiting for you when you are done.

Once your term of service is over that experience translates directly into a commercial career.

Do not discount joining an ROTC program in college for either the Air Force or the Navy. Very similar outcomes and responsibilities, but a lot more flexibility in where you go to school.

Good luck!

First, I am not a pilot, but I am experienced in making career choices. As a pilot, there is more to the job than sitting in a cockpit. That is why the majority of major airlines also want a college degree. That reassures them that candidates are mature and have a broad understanding of the world and culture and people. You may also find that different employers favor different schools. What you will find is that, as you study for your initial private pilot license, you will be exposed to various recommendations on schools. Many pilots learned to fly in the military, and that is an outstanding school for flying. I found this website from the FAA that might be useful:

I went to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. It is considered the "Harvard of the Skies". As such very pricey. I'd look for Universities in your state or neighboring states they may have a flight program. You can also just look at the top flight schools in the country and see which is a good fit (they tend to be expensive). You can go the military route, but don't feel pressured to serve if you don't wish to. You can absolutely go the civilian route and be just as competitive and qualified.
