Dear Jocelyn, I LOVE being a NICU nurse! I went to school to be a nurse because my mom was in the hospital for a long period and I started thinking that maybe I could do that job. I never dreamed about Neonatal because I really never had exposure to it until nursing school. When I saw this area of care, I fell in love and have been here more than 30 years now! I love the intensive care aspects-- lots of equipment and need for specific knowledge, but I believe the best NICU nurses also focus on the whole family who is experiencing a traumatic event. You will need to learn some very technical tasks, but need to also be a very sensitive and caring person. I see that you are from Chicago- I have seen the NICU at Rush Hospital while attending a conference there on quality improvement. There are in fact, several NICUs in your city where you might get an opportunity to shadow or learn more about the care you wish to provide. I suggest you read everything you can about NICU nursing and then see what programs allow shadowers to gain some more in-depth experience. Best of luck in your future! I hope you learn to love it just like I do!
