Lynette’s Answer

Hi Tyler, the job market is very competitive, regardless of your field of study. How competitive will depend on the specific job you are applying for, and how many other people are applying, at the same time. The good news is that there are lots of different types of jobs that Mechanical Engineers can choose from, (designing and improving medical machines, rockets, cars, trains, solar panels, nuclear energy, heating systems, air conditioning & refrigerators, and so much more), so depending on your interests, you should have lots of options. Also, it is a growing field, as demand for alternative energies, AI, iOT, self-driving cars, nanotechnology, etc., is growing, globally. In addition, having that Engineering degree on your resume will certainly help get your resume to the top of the pile, no matter what job you apply for. Best of luck to you!

Lynette recommends the following next steps:

This article lists some of the top large companies in the US for Mechanical Engineers. (Slightly dated, but a good starting point.) https://engineeringcareercoach.com/top-mechanical-engineering-companies-work/
Check out this article: https://money.usnews.com/careers/best-jobs/mechanical-engineer "According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in the field is expected to grow by 9 percent between 2016 and 2026, translating to 25,300 new positions. The broad opportunities within that hiring window should leave aspiring mechanical engineers feeling encouraged."

Simon’s Answer

Engineering and Mechanical engineering in particular a great choice because of the wide variety of fields available. Lynette's response was excellent. Machines and structures (a Mechanical Engineers specialty) will always be needed in our world. One prized attribute of engineers is that they are problem solvers, and every field has problems. Jobs can be from infrastructure projects in underdeveloped areas, to the most sophisticated bio-medical, alternate power or computer industries. Mechanical Engineers design everything from individual machines, to complete processes and facilities. They are also project managers, who analyze situations to come up with solutions and many times, implement those solutions. I was a Mechanical engineer working in the chemical industry with other chemical, civil, and electrical engineers on facility upgrades and new products. I managed projects in the beginning, and later in my career, managed other engineers, developed engineering procedures and standards for engineers across the US. So engineers can work in a small company or a huge multi national company.
Good luck
