Hello Aidea!

When I was just 12, I embarked on my first job as a paperboy, delivering newspapers around my local area. This early start in the working world continued right through my college years. I firmly believe that there's a job out there for everyone, regardless of age.

Remember, no job is too small or insignificant when you're beginning your career journey. It's all about gaining valuable experience and demonstrating commitment. Each job you undertake is a stepping stone towards the next, helping you navigate your career path and construct a solid foundation that evolves with each new role.

Also, bear in mind that a job doesn't have to involve 40+ hours of your week to be valid. Even part-time work during your high school or college years is a job in its own right. It's an opportunity to gain experience and enhance your resume.

Best of luck on your journey!

Conor’s Answer

Everyone is unique, with their own set of experiences and perspectives. Gaining early exposure and experience, particularly during your teenage years, can provide a solid foundation and insight into life's important aspects. It teaches you that hard work is often necessary to achieve your desires. If everything is simply given to you during your youth, you might mistakenly believe that the same will occur in your adult working life. I can assert with certainty that this is not the case. Begin your work journey at the age that feels right for you, and don't concern yourself with others' opinions.

Wayne’s Answer

Hello Aidea, there's no ideal age to kick-start your career, but anytime beyond 18 is usually a good starting point. The sooner you embark on your professional journey, the more financial stability you can achieve throughout your career. Remember, your dreams and aspirations are uniquely yours. Some individuals may lack the drive or ambition, and that's okay. It's unfortunate that your classmate upset you, but it's essential to disregard such negativity. You don't need advice from those who don't uplift you. It's evident that you're eager to excel in life. Surround yourself with individuals who share that same winning spirit. I've found that living in a community of achievers keeps me motivated, inspired, and at the peak of my performance.

Here's wishing you immense success and the best of luck.

Hello, Aidea !

I am impressed at your ambition and accomplishments and applaud you for all you are doing !

To be honest with you, I started child care work when I was 12 till age 17 and when I was 16 I was a dietary assistant in a hospital while also being a volunteer peer counselor. It was all done legally according to child labor laws as well as under working papers obtained from my high school. Working at your age of 20 is so not child labor. The person who told you that is wrong and could have just said that out of envy. Please do not believe it.

The time to begin working is whenever a person feels moved to do so. When you are under the age of 18, there are so many jobs that you can get from babysitting to housecleaning, mowing lawns or shoveling snow. Tweens and teens do it all the time. There's nothing wrong with that. Depending on your country, teens of a certain age can obtain working papers and are allowed to work for a company with limitations for their safety. Some people are more ambitious than others. Starting to work at a young age helps develop communication skills, responsibility and helps one develop the qualities of being a trustworthy person. So it's all good and the extra spending money is nice, too !

I hope that this reassures you that you're doing great and that some people will say things that are discouraging, but you can ignore them. Keep doing what you are doing and I wish you all the best !

Cassie’s Answer

Hi Aidea,

Labor laws are likely different in every country, so I would encourage you to look into what is legal in your country. In the United States we have laws that protect children from working too many hours or working in dangerous conditions. Despite that, we can work around these laws by being paid in cash for a "service to an individual", like babysitting or tutoring, or working in exchange for something other than money, like I worked at my local horse stable to earn free riding lessons. I started working when I was about 13 years old. The laws protecting children work until that child is 18 years old, so at 20, you would be considered a working adult in this country.

Either way, working as a child never hurts you on your resume. If anything, it would hurt the organization that you work for if they are not abiding by the labor laws. I think it's fantastic that you have started working and are already developing your entrepreneurial skills as a clothing designer! Again, it might be different in different countries, but in the US this is a highly desired and marketable skill that can only help you in the future.

Best of luck!
