This could be studying the etymology of the words in the language and the history of the evolution of the language.
Pronunciation variations between the language you are learning and your native or a secondary language you speak.
Basic grammar, some languages use gendered nouns, irregular conjugations of common words.... so many things.
If you are a visual learner vs auditory your method of learning should appeal to your learning style at first before progressing to harder methods to get you started and keep you motivated.
