James’s Answer

Hello Vonceil,

Gary offered some solid advice in his response to your post. I myself am an Accounting major with one year left on my Bachelor's degree. Similar to what Gary said, I am currently in the position where I can choose elective courses to receive certificates once I graduate. For example, I registered to take an income tax certification course next semester. As well, I will be taking a CPA preparatory course in my final semester of college in order to be better prepared to pursue a career as a certified public accountant with a backup income tax accountant option. My advice for you would be to follow the link provided by Gary and find other websites that describe different accounting careers. As for your specific question, I know that CPA certification is a good career option in regards to accounting. If you have questions about some specific careers, feel free to post them here. Thank you for sharing your question with Career Village!

Seifeldin’s Answer

Hi Vonceil, my field is accounting so i will stick to the accounting part and leave marketing to someone who has more experience than me in this, for Accounting major, for accounting i would suggest public accounting as the best option to kick start your career from as you will be exposed to many industries with many different types of entities which will increase your experience and knowledge in the accounting and auditing much more faster than working in an accounting/finance department in any corporate. After gaining experience in public accounting, it would be easy to get an offer for a great position in the industry much more faster than your colleagues who started their career in accounting/finance department. Last but not least, in order to excel in public accounting and accounting in general i would suggest you apply for the CPA as it will greatly affect your learning and opportunities.

Gary’s Answer

Hi,
My sister in law just achieved her degree in accounting so I know a little about the career field. It is a great field to be in with lots of opportunities and jobs. Below is a link that has some good information about education and different areas of expertise for Accountants:

Once you learn the basics of Accounting, you can choose your elective college courses so you can learn about specialty areas like taxes, government accounting, auditing, forensic accounting and more...getting certifications can also help a lot as well. CPA/Certified Public Accountant, CIA/Certified Internal Auditor, etc.
Good luck!
