Hi Pete,

To sell insurance policies (e.g., life, health, auto, or property insurance), you’ll need an insurance license. This requirement ensures that agents fully understand the products they’re selling and can provide clients with accurate guidance. Each state or country typically has specific licensing requirements, which often include completing a pre-licensing course, passing a licensing exam, and sometimes fulfilling continuing education to maintain the license.

You can view the licensing requirements for each state here: https://www.findlaw.com/consumer/insurance/insurance-agent-license-requirements-by-state.html

Best of luck with your journey in insurance!

Depending on what your goals are, if you work for an insurance company such as Geico, Travelers Insurance Company, Progressive, etc., and what department you maybe in, they often provide on the job training. Many start in the customer service realm where you're advising of coverages already in place versus coverage consultation where you would try to sell additional coverage (which would require a license).
I did not need to obtain licensing until I changed departments that required higher authority than just advising of coverages.

The industry also offers various certifications to help you learn more about the details of different programs and the field as a whole.

Patricia’s Answer

You might not need a four-year college degree to work in insurance, but you do have to learn a lot. As Justin mentioned, passing your state insurance license exam is just the start. You'll also need to keep learning to maintain your license. If you want to work for an insurance company, the education needed can vary based on the job. So, yes, you do need some schooling to work in insurance.
