I feel as if some of my greatest strengths in life is that I am well mannered and polite, as well as a pretty good problem solver. What are some careers that fit these characteristics?

Hi Tony

if you are a good problem solver with communication, PMO (project management office) is good fit to you as it is also required a good matter of logic and how to handle conflicts.

Victoria’s Answer

Hi Tony,

This is such an amazing question!!!

You are starting out with some great skills: critical thinking and communications skills – it also sounds like you are also a good listener. The good news is that there are so many different kinds of jobs that require good problem solving or critical thinking skills, especially in the area of STEM.

By 2020, 77% of the jobs/careers will require Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) skills. Some of our biggest challenges and greatest problems will need your talent and interest to solve. The other really great thing about STEM is that it is very interesting, you are always learning, and you get to work with other professionals who are constantly learning too! It’s such a great community and STEM professionals are all working on amazing projects in all areas and industries.

What do I mean? There are many incredible challenges we face today and in the future – you are living in a very important time where the world as we know it is going to change because of advances in science, medicine, communication, and computing. These areas could be the key to solving problems like: how do we get safe drinking water to everyone on our planet? How do we predict weather so that people are safe? How do we protect honey bees that pollinate 75% of our crops? Is there water on other planets? How did the universe begin? Can we live on Mars? How do we improve education delivery for kids in remote areas? Can we get rid of all diseases?

I have found that when I start with a problem that interests me that doors start to opening when I start talking about ideas. I find other professionals that are trying to solve similar problems and we work together – this is where your great communications and problem solving skills are a super combination!!!

I have worked on building transportation models with math; solved community development challenges through public-private partnerships; and worked on virtual platforms to help professionals solve real world problems to overcome barriers in education and communications.

One group that is trying to inspire more solutions to difficult problems and create competition to solve big problems is the XPrize organization. See: https://www.xprize.org/prizes

Victoria recommends the following next steps:

Challenge yourself to explore ideas and careers that you might not have considered. Is there a topic or issue that is really important to you? Is there something you can do today to work on one of these key interests in your community, though school or volunteer opportunities?

Hi Tony. It’s great that you have a personable demeanor that will serve you well in a variety of different occupations. I will mention a couple ideas here. One, a customer service manager might be worth considering given the skills required to solve customers issues or provide advice on a particular service or product. Two, an engineer that can solve for a variety of problems or even improve existing processes or products. There are many other professional fields, yet these are just a couple for you to consider. Good luck!
