Over the past two years, generative AI has rapidly evolved into one of the most transformative technologies in the world. At CareerVillage, we’ve embraced this innovation, integrating generative AI thoughtfully into our work and the tools we offer. However, after listening to our learners’ feedback, we’ve realized that the use of AI-generated answers is getting in the way of why they are coming to our community in the first place: to hear first-hand accounts from real people who believe in them and embrace their dreams. As a result, we’re prohibiting AI-only generated content—defined as content created entirely by an AI system without human input—from our platform.
Why This Matters
AI is a powerful tool with the potential to bridge gaps in equity, and we remain committed to ensuring that all our learners have access to AI-powered support systems. While we encourage the use of AI and the development of new tools, we firmly believe that AI advice is most impactful when used alongside the insights and guidance of human mentors and support networks—not as a replacement.
Over the past year, we’ve observed how AI has been used within our community. Through experimentation, conversation, and listening to our users, we’ve arrived at several key conclusions that have shaped this decision:
What Informed Our Decision
1. Our Learners’ Needs Come First
In recent weeks, we’ve heard from community members—both learners and professionals—about their concerns with the rise of AI-only-generated content. Many expressed frustration with the inaccuracies, lack of personalization, and overall quality of AI-provided advice.
As a platform driven by our community, we take this feedback seriously. Our goal is to create a space where users feel supported and heard. Decisions like this reflect our commitment to listening to our members and adapting based on their needs.
2. CareerVillage Thrives on Human Connection
CareerVillage is unique. Our platform is built on the power of human experiences, connections, and encouragement. Learners come to us to connect with real people willing to share their lived experiences.
As AI continues to reshape how we interact online, we believe it’s important to preserve and celebrate spaces that center human interaction. By prohibiting AI-only content, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering a truly human-centered community.
3. AI Advice Isn’t Always Better Advice
While AI is often seen as a source of reliable and accurate information, this isn’t always the case. Many AI tools have limitations, such as outdated knowledge or context errors, which can result in misleading or harmful advice.
For example, learners relying on AI-only responses might miss critical deadlines, like FAFSA applications, or receive guidance that steers them toward the wrong programs. These inaccuracies can have serious consequences, and we owe it to our community to minimize these risks.
4. Not all AI use is created equal
We believe that there is still space and value for AI within advice-giving. When used with human oversight and intervention, it can take advice from good to amazing. For example, our answer-enhancing tool uses AI to help improve tone without weakening the original message of the author. And Coach, our new AI-powered career development platform, has shown promising results across multiple pilots in delivering career readiness improvements for learners when used within structured educational environments and facilitated by career educators.
But importantly, we’ve learned that it’s critically important to put safety and quality guardrails in place when using AI to prevent hallucination, confusion, or out-of-date advice getting to learners. This is not easy to do, which shows us that it’s necessary to apply AI only when we know those guardrails are in place.
We continue to support the use of hybrid (defined as content created with AI assistance but reviewed and significantly edited by a human before submission) but do not accept AI-only-generated content on the CareerVillage platform.
Looking Ahead
Based on these principles, we believe prohibiting AI-only generated content is the best decision for our community at this time. However, we know the world of AI is constantly evolving, and we’re committed to listening to our users and revisiting this policy if necessary.
We understand this decision may spark mixed reactions, and we encourage open dialogue with all members of our community—even those who may disagree. Your feedback is invaluable as we navigate this rapidly changing landscape together.
Thank you for your patience and support as we continue working to create a platform that puts people first.
