Steven, hello! Sorry for the late response but I had trouble logging in :)
I have just recently retired from a long career in IT. Here is my best advice:
1) Learn everything you can about AI (Artificial Intelligence) ASAP!
2) Take as many courses you can. Some are free, some may require some money.
3) Get as many certifications as you can in AI. These show that you have mastered that level of skill in the area.
Then you can apply for a job and have, imho, a very good chance of getting hired and bypass the internship step.
Worse case, you should easily get an internship in the AI dept of a company.
AI is HOT now. Companies are SCREAMING for people who understand it and can help them.
The more knowledgeable you are in this area, the more certifications you have, the more valuable you will be in the IT industry and the more likely you will be able to get a very good first job in what I hope will be a very long career!

To explore Information Systems (IS) as a 26-year-old, start by leveraging online courses (e.g., Coursera, Udemy, edX) to build foundational knowledge in databases, networking, and programming. Join LinkedIn groups, attend webinars, and network with professionals. For internships, apply to entry-level positions, use platforms like Indeed, and seek volunteer roles for experience.
