IT in general is an ever expanding field, just about all industries have IT at the core of their business. Financial institutions obviously have been IT companies for years, but did you realize that many car companies now consider themselves IT companies as well as there is more technology in today's cars. I would caution against picking a subfield of IT but focus on learning the field and keeping up with the changes in the industry. Networks are software defined and network engineers focus on automation for the network which is software development. Over the last year alone the changes in the way IT is handled have been significant due to the broad impact of AI. AI is also changing the way network engineering will be done. IT will be an ever growing field with the opportunity changing with the technology changing but will continue to grow.

It is important to also focus on communication skills as you build up your IT skills. The ability to communicate clearly is what will allow you to do well assuming you have the base skills and are a continuous learner, keeping up with the industry changes.
