This usually depends if you are a full time or part time student, and could also depend on any scholarships/financial aid you receive. First, I would check the college website for specific answers. While I was in college, the minimum was 12 credit hours. Most of my classes were 3 hours a piece (english, math, science, etc), so I would usually have to take at least 4 classes. If you plan on taking additional classes, I would first consider the cost of these, as well as being able to handle the workload, so you don't overwhelm yourself.

Hi Lizbeth,

Great question! In college, you can be a part-time student, taking less than 12 credit hours, or a full-time student with 12 or more credit hours. The number of classes you take depends on whether you want to be part-time or full-time. If you need to work while studying, you might choose part-time to balance both.

The credit hours per class also matter. Some harder classes offer more credit hours, so you might not need to take as many classes. You can check the college catalog to see how many credit hours each class offers and how often they meet each week. More credit hours usually mean more class meetings.

Think about your graduation requirements and plan when to take different classes, as some aren't available year-round. If you're taking challenging classes, try to pair them with easier ones to avoid stress. It might be a good idea to get used to college life in your first year before taking more than 12 credit hours.

When I started, I took required classes like math, English, and science, along with a fun art class in my first semester. Also, consider the cost and any financial aid or scholarships that require you to take a certain number of classes.
